Google Docs & Spreadsheets

November 2nd, 2006 by · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

I have recently been using Google Docs & Spreadsheets and found it to be really handy – no more worrying about saving files onto discs/ memory sticks, all the information is stored online. The blurb on the website says it all:

If you’ve ever struggled to keep track of different versions of spreadsheet or word processor files sent over email, Google Docs & Spreadsheets may be right for you. It is a web-based word processing and spreadsheet program that keeps documents current and lets the people you choose update files from their own computers. You can, for example, coordinate your student group’s homework assignments or collaborate with remote colleagues on a new business plan.

  • Get started quickly.
Import your existing documents and spreadsheets, or create new ones from scratch.
  • Edit your documents and spreadsheets from anywhere.
All you need is a Web browser – your documents and spreadsheets are stored securely online.
  • Share changes in real-time.
Invite people to your documents/spreadsheets and make changes together, at the same time

I feel that it’s quite a good stepping stone to the file storage facility that Glow will provide.

GLOW

Rather than thinking of Glow as ‘Lighting up Learning’ , might it be more appropriate to think of the word as an acronym of Great Learning On the Web?

I’m sure our fellow collegues would accept the name more readily.

What do you think?

Can anyone else come up with any better acronyms ?

What a fantastic show! Got a lot of inspirational ideas that I hope to take forward over the next few months. At present I am in the process of  setting up a blog with another school – inspired by the Talking Teddies.

There were also many interactive whiteboard activities that I know the children will enjoy and benefit from. Has anyone tried www.classtools.net ? It looks quite promising and is FREE!

I saw a presentation from a representative of Marratech who I believe are providing the portal for the net conferencing aspect of Glow(?). It was fantastic seeing the scope of the facility. He was having a conference with a guy in Sweden  and another guy in England. All were contributing to a piece of work (drawing/writing) on the whiteboard page at the same time. As well as that, the audio quality was excellent.

Now, more than ever, I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into Glow!

Great Day

Had a super day today – all the technology worked as it should!

Afler lunch, I showed a member of staff how to attach pictures on to her emails, and after school I ran an interactive whiteboard workshop to all my primary colleagues. It was very rewarding passing on all that I know.

I was able to answer most of their questions, but luckily I have 2 very able mentors at my school who can (and often do) help with anything I don’t know (I may be tapping at your door soon Graham and Lynne!).

Happy days

I am a primary NQT in Tobermory. I completed my induction year at Tobermory High School Primary Department and I am very fortunate this year as I am teaching ICT to all pupils P1 -P7. I am therefore becoming very familiar with all 5-14 levels!

As I am only working part-time, I hope to spend a great deal of time this year extending my ICT knowledge.

In my induction year, I used the interactive whiteboard whenever possible. The children (P4/5) really enjoyed working with it and loved playing the ‘teacher’ role – finding good and relevant websites and showing them to the class.
